James McGrath is a painter, architect and video artist working primarily in digital art. McGrath’s paintings and videos showcase his depth as a painter and digital artist, harmoniously integrated with his architectural expertise. His artistic journey began in Paris, under the tutelage of Patrick Betaudier, where he delved into the doctrines of 16th and 17th-century maestros. Before earning his stripes as an architect, McGrath honed his skills alongside the legendary landscape artist, Arthur Boyd. McGrath’s artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally in New York, Hong Kong, London, Toronto and Sydney.

In McGrath’s own words; “my art bridges the gap between the past and the present, merging digital techniques with classical craftsmanship. Envision the splendour of 16th Century libraries and Anatomical Theatres, intertwined with cutting-edge climate data visualisations—all set against the backdrop of dramatic Baroque theatrics.”

Displayed on a cutting-edge glass LED wall, Shadow Tree breathes life into a digital eucalyptus forest in immersive 3D. It maps the progression of time, where the illusion of a fabric screen becomes the canvas for the overlay of forest shadows and light. The vibrant backlit luminance contrasts with the depth of mysterious silhouettes, guiding viewers through a nuanced dance of revelation and concealment.
